“There are lots of strange terms related to lighting metrics for plant growth. One of the most common being PPFD; the Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density. It is a measure of 400-700 nm (photosynthetically active) band photon amount for a specific area each second, having the units of μmol/m2/s. PPFD is important since plant growth is directly related to how many photons chlorophylls absorbed. Insufficient PPFD causes lack of growth and starvation. Excessive usage means excessive money spent on lighting, and may cause light burns on the plant. Considering that even small changes in wavelength, like changing from 460 to 490 nm stimulates plant growth differently, giving the right amount of light to plants is a complicated task to accomplish.

In nature, PPFD from sun dramatically changes with many parameters; such as cloudness, time of year, position on Earth etc. It can be said that PPFD roughly oscillates between 50-700. But consider that not every part of Earth is optimal for plant growth. Current literature suggests that most plants need between a PPFD of 330-550, based on the plant type.

AR&TeCS continues its studies on PPFD effect on plant growth, and if you want to know perfect PPFD for your plants, feel free to contact us.”

By using an optimised lighting system with environmental control mechanisms, it is possible to boost production efficiency of your greenhouse up to 80%, depending on the plant type and location.

With the passion to create perfect lighting recipe for plants, AR&TeCS researches on plant growth effects of different wavelengths.

Not all wavelengths are beneficial for plant growth. While some are essential, some may be inefficacious, or even slow down plant growth, decrease nutritive value, or defect plant structure; depending on relative amount.

Common knowledge accepts blue (420-480 nm) and red (620-680nm) light bands as essential. Effects of UV, infrared and green lights are a matter of discussion; since relative amounts of different wavelengths change the effect.

By using an optimised lighting system, you can;

  • Boost plant growth rate
  • Shorten harvest time
  • Have better shaped vegetables
  • Minimise pests & pathogens
